Board
Opportunities
The ability to think
strategically and commitment to the organization's mission are
qualities wanted and needed in all nonprofit boardrooms. At this
time board candidates with expertise in the following fields are
particularly being sought:
- Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising - Orchestras must
build their audiences, social service agencies reach out to their
clients, environmental groups influence legislatures--and all must
build awareness of their mission to funders and the general
public. If communication is your specialty, there are many
boards where your participation would be very valuable.
- Real Estate Development/Facilities Management - Theatres,
community centers, homeless shelters, schools--all must have
appropriate facilities to accomplish their mission. If you can
provide guidance regarding the purchase/construction/utilization/
maintenance of property, there are several interesting board
opportunities.
- Entrepreneurs/Venture Capitalist - Setting priorities and
assessing risks is very hard for social service organizations, as they constantly seek new ways to solve tough problems. For
cultural organizations the creativity cup is usually brimming
full. If evaluating options in the business world is your
specialty, there are interesting opportunities for you to use your
skills in boardrooms where growth is a key issue.
- Technology - As nonprofits try to keep up with rapidly
changing technology, they are looking to their boards for strategic
guidance in determining how to effectively use technology to
accomplish their mission. If you are a computer/.com guru
there is a range of nonprofits that would welcome you in their
boardroom.
- CPA/CFO/Fiscal Management - "Nonprofit" doesn't
mean no money! Fiscal management and financial planning are
critical for the success--and sometimes the survival--of nonprofit
organizations. If you're a financial brain, your expertise can
make a real difference for an organization with a mission of
interest to you.
Have
an unusual background, or business? There are 20,000
nonprofits in the NY/CT/NJ region--one may just need your talents.
We can't guarantee placement, but we would be delighted to learn
of your interest and notify you when a suitable board opportunity
develops.
If you think your experience might be valuable to a nonprofit board please
email Rhoda Barr at rbarr@vcg.org.
