Overview

The Volunteer Consulting Group (VCG), founded in 1969, is a nonprofit organization that works regionally and nationally to strengthen the governing and management capability of nonprofit boards of directors. Fundamental to VCG's mission is bringing outstanding leadership into service as board members of the full spectrum of nonprofit organizations: health, human service, educational, cultural, environmental, advocacy and community development nonprofit organizations.

Regionally, VCG consults to boards on organizational and operational issues: structure, leadership succession and effective governance and oversight. VCG also recruits trustees--assisting boards in defining their board recruitment objectives and then conducting a targeted search for business, professional and community leaders with the desired expertise, diversity of perspective and resources. In addition, the organization works with corporations to build awareness of the need and opportunity for their executives to serve as trustees--and to find appropriate boards where their experience will be beneficial.

Nationally, VCG is the creator and sponsor of www.boardnetUSA.org, a dynamic web resource that enables potential board members--and nonprofit boards needing leadership--to find each other. In addition, VCG serves as a resource and leadership facilitator for "Board Connector" Programs involved in strategically connecting nonprofit boards and potential board members across the United States.

VCG is funded through contributions and grants from over 30 foundations and corporations (including American Express, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Citigroup, the Clark, GE and Hearst Foundations, JPMorgan Chase, Pfizer, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and Verizon). Services are made available to nonprofit organizations on an ability-to-pay basis.
