Jane O'Connell is President of the Altman Foundation, a $200
million foundation established in 1913 under the will of Benjamin
Altman. The Altman Foundation is dedicated to bettering the
lives of New Yorkers through grants to health, educational and
cultural communities as well as to programs that strengthen
communities in the five boroughs of New York City.
Ms. O'Connell began her professional career teaching English
in a New York City public high school and was Assistant Head
for non academic affairs at an independent girls' school from
1976 to 1998, responsible for development, long range planning
and finance. She now consults for schools and small non-profit
organizations in the areas of fund raising, strategic planning
and board development. She was a board member of Governance
Matters, (now merged with Volunteer Consulting Group) an organization
that supports non profit organizations efforts to improve
their leadership and governance and was elected to the VCG
board in June 2009. She is a director of the Lavelle Fund
for the Blind and a trustee of the Endowment for Inner-City
Education and chairs its disbursement committee. She is board
member of Early Steps, a program that assists minority families
in admission to independent schools and is a member of the
national board of Grantmakers for Children Youth and Families
(GCYF) and chairs the human resource committee. She is a trustee
and treasurer of the Museum of the City of New York and is
a member of the Advisory Board for the Fundraising Management
Program a division of the Continuing Education Program at
Columbia University. She just completed six years on the board
of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, New York
Chapter. She was a trustee of City Harvest for 12 years and
chaired its human resources committee. Ms O'Connell is a graduate
of Manhattanville College and received her M.A. in Secondary
Education from New York University (Steinhardt) School of
Education.
